1937 California Bears Program vs. USC TrojansAutographed by 40 players and coaches. National Championship Season!
This "Good" condition program is vertically creased down the middle but is otherwise in Excellent condition. The contents contain 40 total autographs including that of the California football coach, Stub Allison. All of the blue fountain pen signatures are vintage and period to the season. The condition of the autographs is superb with most ranging from 7 to 9 (out of 10) in quality. Besides the coach and assistant coach, three players—quarterback John Meek (All-American), Bill Stoll and Perry Schwartz—all penned their names next to their pictures. The remaining 35 players all applied their signatures neatly next to each of their respective names on the roster sheet.
1937 was the last National Championship season for Cal. The University of California Golden Bears were undefeated and were victorious in the Rose Bowl over the Alabama Crimson Tide. This game was played on October 23, 1937 at California Memorial Stadium with the University of California Berkeley Golden Bears defeating the USC Trojans by a final score of 20-6.
The following is an alphabetical list of the 35 different players who signed the page 19 roster sheet: Dave Anderson, Fred Anderson, Vic Bottari (All-American), Jack Breeden, Jud Callaghan, Sam Chapman (All-American), Ken Cotton, Dave de Varona, Willard Dolman, Claude Evans, Bob Herwig (All-American), Ted Hubert, Bill Huters, Wilbur Ingram, Jim Lang, Robert E. Lee, Jim McDaniel, Bill Plasch, Milt Pollack, Mushy Pollock, Thomas Ray, Jr., Ralph Sauer, Paul Semmens, Jack Smith, Louis Smith, Perry Schwartz, Ed Solinsky, Henry Sparks, Vard Stockton (All-American), Jim Stone, Perry Thomas, Irvine Uteritz Jr. (Asst. Coach - signed on facing page), Chuck Wheeler, Bob Wilhelm, Ted Wilson and Bud Winterbottom. Because John Meek and Bill Stoll signed elsewhere in the program, it appears that the only missing signature from a complete team is Jack Hay. This is likely the most complete example of a quality, autographed 1937 California Golden Bears’ piece of football memorabilia.
We guarantee that all of the autographs will pass JSA and PSA/DNA authentication. A copy of the
general
auction lot "Letter of Authenticity" from JSA is included.
